Steph Curry: More Than A Basketball Player

The other night I was watching the third game of the NBA Finals between the Toronto Raptors and the Golden State Warriors, and like most Canadians, I was going for the Raptors. Nonetheless, there is no player on both teams that I admire more than the Warriors’ Steph Curry. Many people are not aware that Steph spent part of his childhood years in the Greater Toronto Area when his dad, Dell, played for the Raptors. Both Steph and his brother Seth, who also plays in the NBA, attended a school in Oakville.

A Follower Of Jesus

Being a follower of Jesus Christ is a big part of who Steph Curry is. Recently he wrote:

My faith is tested on the court as much as it is in life. It’s the part that always keeps me focused on what I need to do when it comes to my family, when it comes to my job, when it comes to how I treat other people, my appreciation for life and all the good things that happen and how I deal with the bad things that happen.

Curry dedicated his life to Christ when he was in the eighth grade. He was challenged that he could not live off the faith of his parents. He needed to make his own personal decision to trust Christ in order to become a Christian. And that is what he did and he hasn’t regretted the decision one bit.

Curry writes on all his basketball sneakers the words “I can do all things……..”. It is part of Philppians 4:13 which in full reads: “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength”. He was challenged by his mom to find a Bible verse that would give him a purpose and also to remind him who he was playing for every time he laced up his sneakers.

Unanimous Media

Curry has started a movie production company called Unanimous Media in which he seeks to enter the entertainment field and provide movies that have a positive message and highlight the power of faith in Jesus. In little more than a week, Unanimous Media is releasing the film “Emanuel”. It is going to play in some U.S. theaters on two nights, June 17 & 19. It is a documentary film detailing the June 17, 2015, mass shooting by a white supremacist  at Emanuel Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston South Carolina. It happened during a mid week prayer meeting. Nine people were killed.

Curry says “the documentary highlights how a horrible tragedy can bring a community together, and speaks an important message about the power of forgiveness.” It tells the untold story of the nine people killed and the three people who survived the shooting.

Steph Curry is considered by most basketball analysts as one of the best pure shooters in NBA history. He is a great basketball player. This is big part of who he is , but it isn’t the main part of his identity. He is much more than basketball player. At the center of his life is  Christ. It determines who he is in all the different parts of his life. May the Lord continue to shine through Steph and may he continue to be a blessing to many.

QOTD:  Have you found your purpose of why you are here on this earth?

  1. Great report. Inspiring. I love how his mom encouraged him to find a key Scripture that spoke to him. And that growing up with Christian parents he was challenged to make his own choice. The choice to follow Jesus. I think that many people don’t realize that not making a choice is actually making a choice. And not a good one. Thanks Pastor John.
